There are many steps that sex addicts who are working towards sobriety can take to help themselves. Working with a therapist, they can come up with a “boundary plan” to help them determine and stay within the boundaries of permitted sexual behaviors. A therapist can also help a sex addict discover the triggers that cause him to act out. What tools are available for an addict when he’s not in therapy and is dealing with the “real” world? HALT is an acronym for “Hungry, Angry, Lonely, and Tired.” Any of these conditions can make it easier for an addict to act out. Preventing or eliminating these conditions can help a sex addict remain in control.
