It’s well known that the holiday season can be very stressful, but for recovering addicts of all kinds, including sex and love addicts, the holidays can be especially dangerous. Some sex addicts use their addiction to escape from reality. Holiday celebrations with family can force this “escape artist” type of addict to live in the “here and now,” a pressure that can lead to backsliding behavior. Other addicts have the hope that a perfect holiday will alleviate their obsession and make everything right. The inevitable disappointment when things don’t turn out perfectly can lead this type of addict to backslide also. Vigilance and keeping in touch with support groups can help addicts survive the holidays.
