According to the State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Report (TIP report), the United States is the leading country in the world for child sex trafficking, and New York City is the #1 destination in the country for this crime.  Hundreds of thousands of runaway children in the United States are taken and sold for sex.  Without “hard numbers”, resources to fight this crime are scarce.  Other obstacles include the fact that there is no legislation aimed at domestic sex traffickers and it’s challenging for prosecutors to get a conviction because it’s currently up to the victim to prove the offense.
