Traditionally, a higher level of testosterone has been thought to be the key to desire in both men and women. Though pharmaceutical companies rush to devise a Viagra-like counterpart for the female population, scientists question the testosterone connection. A recent study by a University of Michigan professor found that testosterone actually had an adverse effect on female desire for her partner, increased a desire for solitary sexual activity, and had little impact on desire for healthy men. In fact, masturbation frequency seems to be the true mitigating factor in spiking desire and the answers boosting female sex drive seem more complex than today’s medicinal offerings.
